Student/Parent Lectures - Relationships & the Brain
Relationships are not easy at the best of times.
How we think, feel and respond to specific situations, friends, family and important 'others' in our lives, is but a reflection of what cards have been dealt to us individually, from the deck of genetics, parenting, education, happy or traumatic events and so on.
All these elements contribute to the development of our mind- brain interface by influencing and determining the brain's neurochemical mix. This neurochemical mix is responsible for the generation of our thoughts and feelings and ultimately determines how, we act and re-act to life in general or more specifically, within relationships.
We are all aware of the rich emotional surge associated with being in love, physical intimacy or the warmth that often arises through kindness, compassion or generosity. Similarly, we are all aware of the feelings associated with the negative emotions such as anger, jealousy or hate. Importantly, it is very useful for us to understand our interaction with others, from not only an interpersonal point of view, but also from the perspective of, "what it is that is happening in our brain".
This lecture on Relationships & the Brain aims to present parents, teachers and educational health professionals with a unique opportunity to build on their understanding of relationships--and why we often think, feel and act the way we do.
To understand the mind, we need to understand the brain and in doing so, we will be better able to understand our selves and others. The net result will be happiness in our lives, not superficially, but on the deepest level.
